What is a QFIT test?

A Quantitative Faecal Immunochemical Test, or FIT, is a simple at-home screening test that checks for tiny amounts of blood in your poo that you can’t see with the naked eye. This sample is taken using a small plastic sample collection bottle with a stick attached to the lid.

The test is mostly used to screen for bowel cancer and conditions that might lead to bowel cancer, such as polyps (small growths in the bowel that can become cancerous over time).

The test works by detecting a protein called haemoglobin, which is found in blood. Even if there’s no visible blood in your stool, the test can pick up microscopic traces.

Bowel cancer is very treatable when caught early, but it often has no symptoms in the early stages.

This test helps:

  • Detect cancer before symptoms appear
  • Find polyps before they become cancerous
  • Identify people who need further investigation
  • Save lives through early detection

When bowel cancer is caught at the earliest stage, more than 9 in 10 people survive.

FAQs and support

What can I do to prepare for my qFIT Test?
No special preparation is needed. You can eat and drink normally before the test. Simply follow the instructions included in your kit when you’re ready to collect your sample.
How should I return the sample?
Use the pre-addressed return envelope included in your kit. No stamp is needed. Simply seal it and drop it into any Royal Mail postbox. We recommend posting your sample on the same day you collect it.
How accurate is the qFIT test?
The qFIT test is the same quantitative immunochemical test used by the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. It’s highly sensitive to human haemoglobin and is one of the most reliable non-invasive screening methods available.
What would I expect after the test?
Your results will be available within 3 working days of the lab receiving your sample. A Perci Nurse will be available to discuss your results and advise on any next steps.
How will I understand my results?
Your results will clearly indicate whether blood was detected in your sample. Our clinical team will help you understand what your results mean and guide you through any recommended follow-up actions.
